Philanthropist Paul G. Allen’s independent film production company – Vulcan Productions – today unveiled a handbook and video for the family and friends of those serving in the United States Armed Forces. The one-of-a-kind resource was produced in consultation with medical, mental health and military family experts.

This Emotional Life, a PBS documentary series that explores social relationships and human happiness, received a 2010 Voice Award at a ceremony sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services for its respectful and accurate portrayal of people with mental illnesses.

Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island is participating in the pilot distribution of a new toolkit designed to help parents learn about early childhood attachment and to develop the skills necessary to create secure attachments with their children. Women & Infants is one of 10 hospitals in the United States, the only one in New England, taking part in the pilot distribution. As one of the nation’s largest birthing hospitals, Women & Infants was chosen for its high birth rate and the diversity of the families it serves.

As millions of Americans struggle to find more meaning in their lives, Vulcan Productions and NOVA/WGBH have brought together a number of national, public, and private organizations around a nationwide, multi-faceted project sparked by the upcoming PBS series, This Emotional Life. The two-year campaign aims to bring help and hope to millions trying to improve their lives.

What if our lives were just like fairy tales? Every day began with “Once upon a time,” and ended with, “Happily every after”? We knew all about delight and nothing about despair? Some would say that this would be a dream come true; however, in the new PBS series, “This Emotional Life,” Harvard psychologist and best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness, Professor Daniel Gilbert would say that we need the good and the bad in order to achieve happiness in the reality of life.

On the eve of a New Year, Vulcan Production, PBS, and NOVA/WGBH have teamed with Harvard Professor Daniel Gilbert to produce This Emotional Life. This three-part documentary premieres January 4-6, 2010 (at 9:00 p.m.)

In honor of the 1.8 million men and women who have been deployed in America’s Armed Services and their families, Vulcan Productions, NOVA/WGBH, and PBS are honored to join Blue Star Families in a Veterans Day program featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden.
